Overview

The National Fitness Court is an innovative outdoor fitness facility designed to promote physical activity and community wellness. These courts are typically located in public parks and feature a range of exercise equipment and bodyweight stations, making it easy for individuals to engage in a full-body workout. The National Fitness Court app complements this initiative by providing users to perform a check-in and check-out in the Park, access to workout routines, instructional videos, and tracking tools for seven types of body movements to help them to make the most of their outdoor fitness experience. It encourages people to lead healthier lifestyles by offering a convenient and free way to exercise outdoors while fostering a sense of community and well-being.

The brief

National Fitness Campaign needed a single mobile app that could reliably connect a physical, community-based fitness network to a digital experience across thousands of Fitness Court locations nationwide. The team had to find a way to detect when a user physically arrived at or left a Fitness Court and trigger an accurate check-in and check-out - combining NFC taps with background geolocation - without draining the device battery or generating false triggers.

Beyond check-in, the app needed a video-based workout and movement library that felt personal and coached, ran smoothly on lower-end Android devices, and pulled activity data from both Apple Health and Google Fit into one unified view. National Fitness Campaign also needed to migrate existing users and their history from an earlier version of the app onto a modern codebase without disrupting accounts, and to support co-branded content for regional sponsors such as Blue Cross Blue Shield state affiliates without fragmenting the core app.

What we built

Codeprism built the Fitness Court app on React Native, upgraded over time through React Native 0.79 and React 19, with a modular, screen-based architecture built for long-term maintainability.

Technical Composition

Check-in system combining react-native-background-geolocation (geofencing) with an NFC-tap flow, tuned via distance-filter and stop-timeout settings for accuracy and battery efficiency.
Movement and workout library built on react-native-video and react-native-fast-image, organized by category, coach, and skill level, with Lottie animations for onboarding and feedback moments.
Health data integration via react-native-health (Apple HealthKit) and react-native-google-fit, feeding a dedicated Health Stats screen.
Firebase for authentication, analytics, crash reporting, and push messaging, paired with Notifee for rich local and remote notifications such as check-in reminders and challenge updates.
React Native Maps powering the Fitness Court locator, with custom map callouts for court details and directions.
Redux Toolkit and redux-persist for resilient, offline-tolerant state management across sessions, workouts, and challenges.
A dedicated onboarding and migration flow that carried legacy users and their history onto the new platform without disruption.

The outcome

The Fitness Court app is live on the App Store and Google Play and now serves as the digital front door for National Fitness Campaign's nationwide network of free outdoor Fitness Courts. It gives National Fitness Campaign and its sponsors - including multiple Blue Cross Blue Shield state affiliates - a scalable way to drive engagement at every installation, while giving everyday users a free, equipment-free way to find a court, check in automatically, and stick with a structured bodyweight fitness routine.
