Project overview

We built a digital PAN verification capability for a lending platform where merchants and small business owners sign up as partners and refer customers for loans. PAN verification sits at the heart of two journeys: onboarding a new merchant partner, and submitting a loan application for a customer.

A partner simply types in a PAN, and within moments the platform confirms it against official records through the Authify eKYC service and fills in the verified name, date of birth, gender and address. It then identifies the type of business, prevents duplicate registrations, and checks that names match before anyone can move forward.

The result is a slow, manual KYC step turned into an instant, one-tap experience, with PAN details protected at every stage of their journey.

The challenge

The platform needed to onboard a large network of merchant partners and accept loan applications from them, and every one of those records depended on a valid PAN. Collecting PAN details through photos or typed entries meant identity information was entered by hand, reviewed later, and often did not match official records. Nothing stopped the same PAN from being registered by two different partners, there was no easy way to tell an individual from a partnership firm or a company, and every later step, from document collection to bank account checks, relied on information that had never been confirmed.

PAN details were entered manually, leading to typing errors, mismatched names and slow back-office review

The same PAN could be registered under multiple partner accounts, opening the door to duplicate or fraudulent partners

There was no automatic way to know whether a PAN belonged to an individual, a firm or a company, so the right documents could not be requested upfront

Customer names entered by partners often differed from the legal name on the PAN, and nothing caught this before the application reached the lender

PAN details are sensitive personal information and had to be protected at every stage

What we set out to do

  • 01

Verify any PAN instantly from inside the mobile app, with no document upload or manual review

  • 02

Auto-fill verified identity details so partners never have to retype them

  • 03

Allow only one partner account per PAN across the entire platform

  • 04

Identify the business type automatically and ask only for the documents that apply

  • 05

Keep PAN details protected from the partner's phone all the way to the verification provider

  • 06

Use the same verification process for both partner onboarding and customer loan applications

How we solved it

01

Verified Identity Profile in One Step

Partnered with the Authify eKYC service as the single trusted source for PAN information. Instead of a basic check that only confirms a name, the platform requests a full identity profile: complete name, gender, date of birth, address and Aadhaar linking status. Every check is done only with the user's explicit consent, and details are accepted only when the provider confirms a successful match.

Key decision

Full identity profile over a basic name-only check

Result

A single check returns everything needed to pre-fill onboarding and loan application forms instantly.

02

Protection at Every Stage

PAN details are secured throughout their journey. Information travelling between the partner's phone and the platform is protected, and information exchanged between the platform and the verification provider is protected again with a separate, unique security key for every single check. Sensitive details are only ever unlocked by the part of the system that genuinely needs them.

Key decision

Two separate layers of protection, one for the app and one for the provider connection

Result

PAN numbers and personal details are never exposed while moving between the app, the platform and the provider.

03

Automatic Business Type Detection

Every PAN carries a letter that reveals who holds it. The platform reads this and recognises 12 business types, including Individual, Company, Partnership Firm, Hindu Undivided Family, Trust, Association of Persons, Local Authority and Government. The app guides partners as they type, accepting only eligible types (Individual, Partnership Firm and Private Limited Company). Once verified, the business type decides which of four document checklists the partner sees: individual without GST, individual with GST, partnership firm, or company.

Key decision

Detect the business type from the PAN itself, with eligibility rules the business team can adjust without an app update

Result

Partners are asked only for the documents that apply to them, making onboarding faster and less confusing.

04

Duplicate Prevention and Smart Name Matching

Before verifying, the platform checks whether the PAN already belongs to another partner and, if so, guides them to sign in instead. For loan applications, the name the partner enters is compared with the name on the PAN, allowing for small spelling and spacing differences. Applications with less than a 70% match are rejected automatically. The verified PAN name is later used again to confirm the name on the partner's bank account, creating one consistent identity trail.

Key decision

Flexible name matching instead of requiring an exact match

Result

Genuine customers with minor spelling differences get through, while clearly mismatched identities are stopped before reaching the lender.

What we learned

This project showed that PAN verification is much more than confirming a number. Treated as the first step in a customer's identity trail, it can decide eligibility, choose the right documents, prevent duplicates and confirm names later in the journey, all at once. By connecting to the Authify eKYC service securely and building smart business type detection and name matching around it, we turned a slow, manual KYC step into an instant, one-tap experience for merchant partners and their customers.

  • 01

Requesting a full identity profile paid off, because one check powers form auto-fill, loan applications and later bank account name checks

  • 02

Sensitive identity details need protection at every stage, not just between the phone and the platform

  • 03

Keeping eligibility rules adjustable by the business team keeps onboarding flexible as policies change

  • 04

Flexible name matching with a clear threshold strikes the right balance between a smooth customer experience and fraud prevention

Frequently asked questions

How does digital PAN verification work in the app?

The partner types in a PAN and gives consent. The platform confirms it against official records through the Authify eKYC service and returns the verified name, date of birth, gender and address, which are filled in automatically.

How is PAN data kept secure?

PAN details are protected at every stage. Information between the partner's phone and the platform is protected, and information between the platform and the verification provider is protected again with a unique security key for every check.

What happens if the customer's name does not exactly match the PAN?

Names are cleaned up and compared for similarity, so small differences in spelling, spacing or initials are accepted. Loan applications with less than a 70% match are rejected automatically before they reach the lender.

Can the same PAN be used by two partners?

No. The platform checks every PAN before verifying it. If it already belongs to another partner, the user is guided to sign in with their existing account instead.
